FIELD: mechanical engineering; applicable in purification of lubricant-coolant and other process fluids from mechanical impurities. SUBSTANCE: method includes purification of contaminated liquid in magnetic chain separator with liquid multiple passage through fixed-size gaps between magnetic rods adjacent to one another and located successively on zigzag part of its endless branch with direction of flow of purified liquid noncoinciding with longitudinal axes of magnetic branches. Liquid is additionally purified during its passage through gaps variable in size between magnetic rods located on different adjacent conjugated zigzag parts of endless branch of magnetic separator in branch motion. Sizes of gaps between magnetic rods located on different adjacent conjugated zigzag parts of endless branch of magnetic separator are smaller or equal, or larger than gaps between adjacent to one another magnetic rods and located successively on endless branch of magnetic separator, or are not used with fixed endless branch of magnetic separator.
