FIELD: organic chemistry, fine organic synthesis, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: aromatic aldehydes (vanillin, syringaldehyde) are widely used in pharmaceutical, confectionery and perfume-cosmetic industry. Invention describes method of synthesis of aromatic aldehydes by oxidation of lignins with nitrobenzene in alkaline medium in the presence of oxidizing mixture consisting of hydrazine hydrate, elemental sulfur and sodium hydroxide taken in the ratio 1: 1: 1, respectively, and in the amount 2.0-3.5 wt.% to mass of absolutely dry wood. EFFECT: increased yield of end product. 1 tbl, 11 ex
