FIELD: fire extinguishing. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to fire-extinguishing powdered compositions based on potassium chloride. The latter is dried, cribled, redried and then subjected to hydrophobization with alkylhalosilanes in vapor phase at 80-100 C after preliminary passage of air with absolute moisture content 60-70 g/cu.cm. Hydrophobized powder is calcined in silica powder medium at 80-155 C for 2.5-4.5 h and recribled to give powder with high hydrophobicity level, in which fraction below 50 mcm constitutes at least 70%.
