FIELD: sampled roentgen engineering; non-destructive inspection of objects. SUBSTANCE: method depends on X-raying of objects, recording of rays incident on and passed through the latter, comparison of distinguishing characteristics (mass coefficients of X-ray attenuation) obtained in measurements with those of known materials, and display of results on monitor. Spectral intensity of rays incident on and passed through object is proposed to be measured for each element of spatial resolution of n-component object volume with n + 1 sample energy value. Identification is made by sequential retrieval of n materials from data bank and processing of measurement results until desired conformity between measurement results and characteristics determined by data on expected composition of object is attained. Modified method for identifying probable content of arbitrary component in object on the background of residue of lightweight elements is proposed that involves measurement of spectral radiation intensity at three sample energy values.
