Catalyst contains copper chloride as main component supported by alumina in the form of hollow cylindrical granules having at least three through holes, at least 40% of the pore volume being constituted by pores with radius corresponding to maximum value on porosity distribution curve. Catalyst preparation involves impregnation of alumina with copper chloride solution.
