FIELD: electrical engineering, electric steel making and welding equipment. SUBSTANCE: secondary winding of each phase is made of two parts connected to one electrode through rectifiers. In this case one part of secondary winding is designed for total electric power and maintenance of low-voltage arcing and its other part is continuation of first part jointly generating voltage of initiation of arc under all real operational conditions of furnace and has minimal power. It is connected in series with choke or adjusting resistor. Electric arc is initiated thanks to uninterrupted or intermittent transition from stable low-power discharge under action of voltage in entire secondary winding. As arcing develops high-temperature plasma is formed. Due to drop of voltage across choke potentials of both parts of secondary winding are leveled and load on them is distributed in inverse proportion to their resistance.
