FIELD: neutralizing ion beams on gaseous bodies in plasma accelerators; process plasma sources. SUBSTANCE: compensating cathode has case 1, movable electrode 2, and coaxially arranged emission unit 3 with gas admission tube 4; ceramic cap 5 is arranged coaxially between case and movable electrode so that part of side surface of cap is joined with side surfaces of case and starting electrode and that longitudinal and radial gaps L1 and L2 are formed between starting electrode and remaining surface of cap; at least two longitudinal slots 6 are made on side surface of starting electrode. At least two riveting holes or bosses 7 are uniformly arranged on side surface of case over its outline at junction point between case and ceramic cap; side surface of the latter has helical or annular grooves 8. Lug 9 with through hole 10 is made at inlet end on side surface of starting electrode to receive electrical conductor 11 of power system. EFFECT: enhanced reliability and service life. 3 cl, 4 dwg
