FIELD: chemical industry, more particularly preparation of acids or esters thereof by carbonylation of alcohols and/or ethers thereof in two reactors. SUBSTANCE: method comprises feeding alcohol and/or reactive derivative thereof into first reactor in which it is made to contact with carbon monoxide in liquid phase at elevated temperature and higher pressure. Reaction mixture comprises halogen and/or halogen compound as promoter and group VIII noble metal as carbonylation catalyst. From alcohol containing n carbon atoms is prepared carbonylation product comprising carboxylic acid containing n+1 carbon atoms, and/or carboxylic acid ester containing n+1 carbon atoms, and alcohol containing n carbon atoms. Outgoing gas stream which includes carbon monoxide, optionally halogen and/or halogen compound as promoter and optionally carbonylation product is removed along gas discharge line from first carbonylation reactor. Removed outgoing gas stream is introduced into second carbonylation reactor and is made to contact with alcohol containing m carbon atoms wherein m is 1 to 6 and reactive derivative thereof in the presence of halogen and/or halogen compound as promoter and heterogeneous carbonylation catalyst which is essentially group VIII carrier based noble metal. In second reactor prepared is additional amount of carbonylation product containing m+1 carbon atoms, and/or carboxylic acid ester containing m+1 carbon atoms, and/or carboxylic acid ester containing m+1 carbon atoms, and alcohol containing m carbon atoms and/or carboxylic acid anhydride containing m+1 carbon atoms. EFFECT: smaller amount of gas outbursts due to purposeful use of outgoing gases from carboxylation reactor without purification thereof to prepare the desired products. 18 cl, 1 dwg, 11 tbl
