FIELD: metallurgy, more particularly steels having high mechanical properties and service reliability used for highly loaded components operating at temperature up to 4K (269 C). SUBSTANCE: described is metastable austenitic steel comprising, wt %: carbon, not higher than 0.06; chromium, 14.0-16.0; nickel, 8.5-9.5; manganese, 7.5-8.5; nitrogen 0.2-0.4; vanadium, 0.9-1.5; titanium, 0.01-0.20; cerium, 0.015-0.02; calcium, 0.001-0.01; barium, 0.001-0.01; and iron, the balance. Vanadium to titanium to nitrogen ratio is 3.1-3.3. In case of low-temperature deformation of steel there occurs γ_→α conversion which is associated with conversion induced plasticity effect. EFFECT: higher plasticity and impact viscosity of steel at cryogenic temperatures due to realizing conversion induced plasticity effect. 2 tbl
