FIELD: sorting bank notes by means of bank automatic sorting machines. SUBSTANCE: method involves conveying bank notes over supporting surface such as that of supporting roller with bank-note thickness measured relative to this surface, comparing results obtained with desired values corresponding to thickness of one or two bank notes; thickness measurements are made using triangular laser method by measuring distance hi between supporting roller surface and bank note surface at number of points on bank note surface; measurement results obtained in this way are distributed among three intervals: 0<hi<t, t<hi<2t and 2t<hi, where t is desired thickness of bank note; factors k1, k2, k3 of measuring result keeping within mentioned respective interval are determined and if k1 = 0, k2 = 0, k3 = 1, it shows that two clinging bank notes have passed and they are classed as problematic bank notes; if k1 = 0, k2>km, k3 <1, where km is minimal value of k at which check is considered as confident, it points to the fact that single bank note has passed; if k1≠0, k2>km, k3<1, bank note is considered to be damaged and should be classed as worn bank note.
