FIELD: trenchless underground drilling, particularly, systems and methods for determination of underground drilling tool position with use of sounding and detection technique similar to radar. SUBSTANCE: drilling tool has a device conditioning definite signal having characteristic feature in response to sounding signal transmitted from surface. Interaction of sounding signal transmitter located at surface with conditioner of signal having characteristic feature and located inside drilling tool ensures accurate determination of drilling tool position despite the presence of considerable background signal. Signal having characteristic feature produced by drilling tool may be conditioned either passively or actively and differ from sounding signal in one and more aspects including position in time, frequency composition or polarization. Prospecting of drilling site performed either before drilling or during drilling provides for obtaining of data relating to properties of researched ground and identification of underground objects such as buried services. EFFECT: increased efficiency of trenchless underground drilling due to determination of drilling tool position under ground. 32 cl, 32 dwg
