FIELD: engine manufacture. SUBSTANCE: engine operating process includes air admission to cylinders, fuel injection in two portions, combustion of air-fuel mixture, outlet of combustion products, and conversion of energy of expanding gases. First portion of fuel is subjected to thermochemical conversion prior to combustion by injecting it into combustion products contained in cylinder before piston comes to upper dead center upon closure of exhaust valve. Air admission to cylinders is started after piston has reached upper dead center. In the process amount of first portion of fuel is metered depending on oxygen content in exhaust gases and during idle running period injection of first fuel portion is ceased. EFFECT: enhanced economic efficiency; reduced toxicity of exhaust gases. 1 cl, 2 dwg
