FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: proposed method consists in reduction of ore at one reducing zone as a minimum into partially and/or fully reduced sponge iron which is then molten in melting gasifying zone of melting and gasifying apparatus at delivery of carbon- containing and oxygen-containing material at simultaneous forming of reducing gas. At least sponge iron loaded periodically into melting and gasifying zone forming area of accumulation of sponge iron introduced into layer of solid carbon carriers located one above another and separated by solid carbon carriers. Each area of accumulation of sponge iron is located over cross section area of melting and gasifying zone leaving free sections. Reducing gas formed in melting and gasifying zone passes past areas of accumulation of sponge iron during its melting upward through sections of cross sectional area which are free from sponge iron and are formed by carbon carriers. EFFECT: possibility of ensuring required porosity of layer of solid carbon carriers even at loading fine-grained sponge iron and consequently adequate passability of layer of solid carbon carriers for gas. 11 cl, 2 dwg
