FIELD: sealing devices, namely end sealings of multimode machines with high pressure of working fluids. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of measuring gap value between non-rotating sealing ring and rotating ring; comparing measurement result with desired gap value; controlling position of non-rotating ring with use of electromagnets depending upon difference of measured and desired gap values. Apparatus includes pickup for measuring gap between non-rotating and rotating rings, system of electromagnets, armature of electromagnets, unit for setting gap value. Non-rotating ring is mounted in armature of electromagnetic system. Terminal of unit for setting gap value is connected with first input of regulator of electric current of electromagnets. Second input of said regulator is connected with pickup for measuring gap. Output of electric current regulator is connected with windings of electromagnets. Method and apparatus allow to provide guaranteed gap between sealing rings. EFFECT: enhanced reliability and wear resistance of sealing. 2 cl, 1 dwg
