SUBSTANCE: method and device are designed to compress digital messages for their transmission and storage such as voice, sound, television, facsimile, and the like messages converted to digital form. Proposed method involves pre-sampling infinite-alphabet character string being coded, organizing approximating strings to be coded, coding these strings, determining length of each approximating coded string and comparing it with preset maximum permissible length, erasing strings whose length exceeds maximum permissible value, selecting string closest to that coded out of remaining strings, and taking this string as binary-coded character string.
