FIELD: oil production; applicable in monitoring of quantities of fluid flowing through pipeline and productivity of oil wells. SUBSTANCE: method includes determination of velocity of fluid flowing through fixed cross-section of pipeline by measurement of acoustic noises produced by flowing fluid through fixed cross-section of pipeline and subsequent processing of obtained results. Acoustic noises are converted into electric signals of various amplitudes with frequencies ranging within 20 Hz-12 kHz. Amplitudes of signals are determined on two working frequencies within said range. Fluid flow velocity is determined by difference of said amplitudes. In measurement of flow rate in well discharge pipeline equipped with electric centrifugal pumps, working frequencies are selected within the range of 0.9-4.0 kHz.
