FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for producing para-xylene. Method includes: (a) providing a catalyst comprising ZSM-5, phosphorus or a compound thereof and a binder, wherein the catalyst contains from 5 to 15% by weight of ZSM-5 and is steamed at a temperature of at least 900°C, wherein said steamed catalyst has a diffusion parameter for 2,2-dimethylbutane of about 0.1-15 seconds-1 according to the measurement data at a temperature of 120°C, and a pressure of 2,2-dimethylbutane of 60 Torr (8 kPa); and (b) alkylating benzene and/or toluene with an alkylating reagent selected from the group consisting of methanol, dimethyl ether, and mixtures thereof, in the presence of said steamed catalyst under conditions involving a temperature of not less than 500°C, and the partial pressure H2O, 15-15.7 pound-force/inch2 abs. (104-108 kPa abs).
EFFECT: catalyst used has a unique combination of hydrothermal stability, selectivity and activity.
