FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of converting an aliphatic hydrocarbon with few carbon atoms to high-molecular weight hydrocarbons, including aromatic hydrocarbons, involving contacting starting material containing said aliphatic hydrocarbon, with a dehydrocyclisation catalyst in conditions which are effective for converting said aliphatic hydrocarbon to aromatic hydrocarbons and obtaining an effluent stream containing aromatic hydrocarbons and hydrogen, where said dehydrocyclisation catalyst contains a metal selected from a group comprising molybdenum, rhenium and tungsten, and a molecular sieve containing ZSM-5 and where the ratio of the amount of all Bronsted acid parts in the molecular sieve to the amount of said metal is less than 0.4 mol/mol of said metal. The invention also relates to an aromatic hydrocarbon product obtained using said method and a method of producing a composition containing paraxylene, which uses an aromatic product obtained using the method described above.
EFFECT: use of the present invention reduces catalyst selectivity with respect to coke.
