FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: described are method of preparing ultrahigh molecular polyethylene and method of activation of catalyst carrier. Defined are production parameters of gas-phase process in fluidized bed: reaction temperature, circulating gas rate, effective residence time in reactor and concentration values of but-1-ene and carbon dioxide in circulating gas. Described is specific thermal method of activation of silicon dioxide as chromocene catalyst carrier weight loss is corrected with temperature. Process parameters make it possible to prepare high free-flowing polyethylene grit with friability of grit increased by at least two times as compared with well known grits of polymers. Improved level of viscosity is attained at given level of molecular weight and density, and desired processing stability is attained.
