FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to modificators used in cast iron smelting. Invention proposes the modificator containing components taken in the following ratio, wt.-%: silicon, 20-55; carbon, 20-65 and/or silicon carbide, 30-40; calcium, 0.5-6.0 and iron, the balance. Modificator can contain additionally one element taken among the group including, wt.-%: magnesium, 1-3; titanium, 1-5; zirconium, 1-5; rare-earth metals, 1-5; strontium, 2 but not above; barium, 2-6. Method of modificator making involves grinding ferrosilicon and ferrocalcium as ferroalloys and carbon- -containing additions also and their mixing. After grinding fractions of ferroalloys with grain size 0.315-5.0 mcm and carbon-containing additions with grain size 0.315-2.0 mcm are taken and briquetting is carried out after mixing by pressing. Crucible graphite or electrode graphite and silicon carbide are used as carbon-containing additions. Modificator is made as briquette in the form of tablet with diameter 7-100 mm with humidity 0.2%, not above. In other variant small- dispersed fractions of components with grain size 0.315-2.0 mcm are used only. Invention provides the complete assimilation of modificator by cast iron.
