FIELD: hydrogenation catalysts. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for selective hydrogenation of acetylene hydrocarbons, in particular production of ethylene via selective gas-phase acetylene hydrogenation and can be used to remove acetylene impurities from gas mixtures. More particularly, objective of invention is to develop an efficient method for hydrogenating acetylene hydrocarbons involving catalysts containing no precious metals. The task is solved be selectively hydrogenating acetylene hydrocarbons at temperatures between 0 and 200 C and pressures between 1 and 100 atm on catalyst prepared through reduction in hydrogen or nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere at 250 to 800 C of (i) cobalt hydroxocarbonate and one or several 3- or 4-period metals having oxidation state II or III and structure of hydrotalcite type CoxMy(OH)2(x+y)CO3•nH2O (wherein x/y ratio varies between 0.1 and 10 and 0≤n≤100) or (ii) product of heat treatment of (i) performed at 300 to 900 C. Possible acetylene impurities are acetylene itself, methylacetylene and vinylacetylene.
