FIELD: analytic chemistry of organic compounds. SUBSTANCE: interaction reaction between phenols and molecular bromine is employed to identify phenols in aqueous media. Bromine derivatives of phenols are formed in acidic or neutral aqueous media with excess of molecular bromine in the course of several seconds with quantitative yield, then their concentration caused by oxidation diminishes. Dependence of concentration of bromine derivatives of phenols on duration of bromination built in coordinates lnC= f(t) displays linear character and is described by common kinetic equation of first- order reaction. Tangent of inclination angle of straight line is equal to constant of rate of oxidation reaction which value characterizes resistance of bromine-derived phenol to oxidation and can be used for identification. EFFECT: development of reliable method of identification of phenols in aqueous medium. 2 dwg, 6 tbl
