FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method involves using different cooling procedures within different temperature ranges during quenching, particularly within martensite transition temperature range, and novel tempering procedure. Novel cooling and tempering procedures provide for minimal deformation and reduced toughness anisotropy of steel. Method may be employed for thermal treatment of parts used in precise instrument making and mechanical engineering. Parts manufactured from such steel have improved mechanical properties, prolonged service life and increased precision of dimensions. EFFECT: enhanced reliability in operation of parts and intensified steel production process. 2 cl, 1 tbl
