FIELD: organic chemistry, catalysts, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of synthesis of methyl formate used as an intermediate substance in synthesis of organic acids - formic, acetic, propionic acids and their esters and for formamides also and to a method of synthesis of catalyst for synthesis of methyl formate. Methyl formate is synthesized by dehydrogenation of methanol in gaseous phase at 150-350 C, under atmosphere pressure in the presence of copper-containing catalyst comprising the following content of elements as measured for metals, at. %: copper 10-30; zinc, 10-50; aluminium and/or chromium, and/or zirconium, or silicon. Catalyst for synthesis of methyl formate by dehydrogenation of methanol in gaseous phase is prepared by thermic decomposition of copper, zinc, aluminium and/or chromium, and/or zirconium or silicon with structure of hydrozincite or hydrotalcite or stivencite in air flow at 350-550 C followed by reduction in hydrogen. Catalyst shows high selectivity and rate of conversion of methanol to methyl formate. EFFECT: improved method of synthesis, improved properties of catalyst. 2 cl, 1 tbl
