FIELD: power engineering. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to design and method of operation of engines with external heat supply (external combustion engines) and it can be used in designing high economy ecologically clean omnivorous engines. Invention is aimed as solving the problem of executing two working strokes in four variable volumes of two working cylinders at one revolution of power takeoff shaft at isobaric process of expansion and displacement of working medium, also improving heat exchange processes in regenerators, arrangement of valve timing mechanisms and sealing of rods in cold zones and improving all relative characteristics of engine. According to invention, when in bottom dead center maximum pressure compensator is placed in communication with piston expansion space through regenerator and heater, working medium rushes into piston space and working stroke takes place at constant pressure, and at the same time, same amount of cold working medium is compressed in rod space is forced out into maximum pressure compensator. EFFECT: possibility of creating compact high economy engines with external heat supply surpassing all known heat engines by absolute and relative characteristics. 3 cl, 6 dwg
