FIELD: nuclear power engineering. SUBSTANCE: capsule used in gamma-ray sources for type RBMK reactors has pressurized box accommodating pellets of material to be irradiated; these pellets are separated by means of spacer pellets of material slightly absorbing neutrons, their length being found from equation Hsp=(1/2,5)Hip, where Hsp is spacer pellet height, mm; Hip is height of pellet to be irradiated, mm. In addition diameter of spacer pellet in capsule may be 0.8-0.9 of that of pellet being irradiated. As an alternative spacer pellets of irradiating device may be made of zirconium. Proposed design provides for essential increase in rate of cobalt-60 production (by 50%) in irradiating devices used for RBMK reactors.
