FIELD: visible radiation sources for projectors, liquid-crystal screen illumination lamps, displays, light-panel components. SUBSTANCE: device has gas-filled chamber, cathode made in the form of strips, and anode both disposed in opposition to one another. Surfaces carrying electrodes including surfaces of electrodes proper are coated with photoluminescent phosphor. Distance L between electrodes is found considering it to equal electric - track length of electrons by selecting radiating gas pressure and voltage U between electrodes lower than I/e, where I is ionization potential of atoms or gas molecules; e is electron charge. Autoemission cathode used in device is assembled of parallel strips, width d of each strip being found from condition Ed = U, where E is electric field intensity near cathode strip surfaces sufficient to ensure desired autoemission; distance between strips is longer than or equal to L; strip may be made in the form of metal film deposited on insulating substrate covered in its turn with diamond- carbon or carbon film.
