FIELD: sealing technology; mechanical seals for hydraulic and pneumatic machines whose working members perform rotary and reciprocating motion. SUBSTANCE: in mounting the mechanical seal in housing of machine or in cylinder, sealing rings are pressed to surface of shaft, rod or cylinder to be sealed by means of flexible holder. Sealing rings are tightly lapped to each other and are located in pairs and turned at angle of 180 deg relative to each other; each pair of sealing rings is turned relative to adjacent pairs at angle of 90 deg, thus forming labyrinth slit between surface being sealed and set of sealing rings. Outer sealing surfaces of sealing rings or their parts are non-cylindrical and concentric. Additional chambers are formed to impart seal labyrinth form. Maximum effect is obtained when cross section of additional chambers have form of right-angled scalene triangle. EFFECT: increased hydraulic resistance; removal of solid particles and products of wear; enhanced operational efficiency. 6 cl, 3 dwg
