FIELD: forestry. SUBSTANCE: method involves determining diameter of tree trunks, measuring their mean height; determining total area of rectangles having one side equal to diameter of tree trunk and other side equal to tree mean height. Total area of rectangles is in direct proportion with total area of side surfaces of tree trunks. Depending on value of said total area, necessity of performing care cuttings is determined. Method allows care cutting quality to be increased due to controlled amount of wood removed by cutting through the use of factor, which is constant for common plantations, and disturbance of structure of tree stock due to cutting to be reduced due to removal of wood within the range of natural variation of trunk side surface total area per unit of area of forest plot. EFFECT: increased efficiency, provision for restoration and further growth of stock of trees after care cuttings. 5 tbl
