FIELD: catalysts for petrochemical processes. SUBSTANCE: catalyst contains 1-5%: nickel and/or cobalt oxide and 8-15% molybdenum trioxide on alumina-silicabased carrier containing 0.01-50% silica and 0.01-5% of at least one modifying compound of metal selected from sodium, iron, lanthanum, cerium, zinc, tungsten and/or 0.5-10% of nonmetal compound. Precursor of alumina is roentgen-amorphous layered aluminum compound of formula Al2O3•nH2O wherein n=0.3-1.5. Catalyst preparation procedure includes extrusion of aluminum hydroxide containing modifying compounds, drying, calcination, impregnation with active nickel and/or cobalt and molybdenum active components followed by drying and calcination. Aluminum hydroxide utilized is rehydration product of aforementioned roentgen-amorphous layered aluminum compound, which contains, partially or completely, aforementioned metal compounds (0.01-5%) and/or at least one nonmetal compound selected from phosphorus, fluorine, and boron (0.5- 10%).
