FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: vinyl acetate is prepared by bringing ethylene, acetic acid, and oxygen-containing gas into contact with supported palladium catalyst. Preparation of catalyst includes following stages: impregnating catalyst support with palladium compound, converting palladium compound into essentially metallic palladium, and caking of supported palladium at 650 to 1000 C in presence of reduction gas selected from nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and helium or in presence of inert gas or gas mixture. Reaction proceeds at 145-195 C and pressure 1 to 20 atm. Advantageously, palladium compound is palladium acetate, sulfate, nitrate, chloride or halogen-containing palladium salt. Support is preferably selected form following group: silica, alumina, silica/alumina, titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, and carbon. EFFECT: increased activity and life time of palladium catalyst. 13 cl, 3 dwg, 2 tbl, 9 ex
