FIELD: electrical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method for checking functional capabilities of tap changer actuated to change over loads includes steps of periodic measurement of parameter such as tap-changer drive shaft torque, evaluation of tap changer position in the course of load change-over operations, comparison of measured value with respective position values, and division of entire-tap changer position range into partial ranges which correspond to sequential steps of load change-over procedure. This is followed by evaluation of characteristic values such as mean value of measured quantities within each partial range, and these values are compared with parameter file stored in memory wherein characteristic value is assigned identification code. Codes obtained are then processed to find out if generation of warning or drive turn-off messages is required. EFFECT: reduced memory capacity required for check-up procedures. 6 cl, 3 dwg, 2 tbl
