FIELD: sulfur dioxide oxidation units; production of sulfuric acid from sulfur. SUBSTANCE: proposed sulfur dioxide oxidation unit includes air blower, sulfur burning surface, waste-heat boiler with evaporating members, contact apparatus with five layers of catalyst, second-stage steam superheater, two gas heat exchangers for cooling the gases after second and fourth layers of catalyst, two gas heat exchangers for cooling the gases after third layer of catalyst, economizer for cooling the gases after third layer of catalyst, first-stage steam superheater and economizer with one water flow for cooling the gases after fifth layer of catalyst and drum-separator; gas inlet of economizer used for cooling the gases after third layer of catalyst is connected with gas inlet of first gas heat exchanger after third layer of catalyst and its gas outlet is connected with inlet to second gas heat exchanger after third layer of catalyst; its water flow inlet is connected with outlet of economizer mounted in one housing with first-stage steam superheater and outlet is connected with drum-separator.
