FIELD: image compression to reduce requirements to digital video decoder bandwidth. SUBSTANCE: digital-image adaptive processor precedes MPEG2 coder and receives high-definition signal (1920x1080) pixels per image) designed for relaying or storage and adaptively filters off signal with respect to low frequencies. Signal is subjected to two-dimensional filtering of low frequencies to eliminate coding distortions and associated noise; then it is horizontally decimated to produce hybrid signal of lower definition (1280x1080 pixels per image) which is unpacked and decoded by receiver, whereupon hybrid-signal sampling frequency is raised to its source definition. Proposed method enables transmission of one highdefinition program with several standard-definition programs over 6- MHz ground relaying channel. EFFECT: improved image recovery for high-definition reproduction. 30 cl, 5 dwg, 1 tbl
