FIELD: textile industry. SUBSTANCE: method involves providing analysis of interference pattern during passage of polarized light through filaments disposed between covering glasses; placing filaments in nematogenic mesophase; heating filaments with nematic and determining width of nematic zone with disturbed homeotropic orientation in surface region of filaments before phase transition of nematic to isotropic state; measuring transition temperature to judge the extent of maturity of filaments. Double refection factor of nematic is within the range of 0.2-0.3. EFFECT: increased efficiency in primary processing of cotton filaments and provision for obtaining objective data on extent of maturity of cotton filaments. 2 cl, 8 dwg, 1 tbl
