FIELD: rolled stock production, namely operation of backup rolls, possibly in mills for cold rolling of steel sheets. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of alternating operation of backup roll and adjacent rolling roll and multipass removal of hardened layer; setting thickness of removed layer no less than 1 mm for one pass and decreasing said value as grinding from 0.05-0.07 mm until 0.001-0.01 mm. Invention provides possibility for exposing on surface of roll barrel sublayer hardened at rolling process, lowered thermal loads of roll. EFFECT: lowered consumption of backup roll. 1 note, 1 tbl
