FIELD: mining industry, selection of operational equipment. SUBSTANCE: procedure establishing strength of rocks consists in action on rock mass with breaking load of rotating indenter. In process of breakage of rocks power of acoustic vibrations in face zone in frequency range 7-20 kHz and rate of relative displacement of indenter and rock mass are measured simultaneously. Strength indexspecific acoustic energy released with breakage is found by division of power of acoustic vibrations by rate of relative displacement of indenter and rock mass. Gear establishing strength of rock has loading unit coming in the form of cutting tooldiamond wheel put on spindle and connected with the aid of transmission mechanism to driving motor and measurement unit. Gear is also fitted with mobile carriage with gripper that holds rock specimen, carriage is linked by means of transmission mechanism to driving motor and moves along guide perpendicular to rotation axis of diamond wheel with preset going of diamond wheel deeper into rock specimen. Carriage carries transmitter of acoustic vibrations installed in face zone. EFFECT: enhanced accuracy of determination of strength properties of examined rock. 2 cl, 3 dwg, 2 tbl
