SUBSTANCE: activated carbon material suitable for use in a variety of industrial and scientific areas is prepared from humus coals or their cokes, or still from oil cokes, which are subjected to oxidative sulfuric-acid sulfonation in presence of nitrous acid salts. Sulfonated oil stock is subjected to melting in presence of Ia-group metal hydroxide taken in sufficient amount to form corresponding phenolates, which are then carbonized at 600 to 1000 C in reductive or inert milieu.
