FIELD: transport engineering; safety devices. SUBSTANCE: according to proposed method inflatable envelope of safety device is set in operating condition by interrupting gas flow through intake opening of envelope in preset time moment. In process of inflation of envelope with gas, flow of gas is interrupted and renewed, thus forming sequence of gas pulses through intake opening of envelope at controlled duration of gas pulses and intervals. According to one version, liquefied carbon dioxide is used in gas source. Safety device implementing described method contains inflatable envelope with intake hole to let in gas filling the envelope to ready-for-use state and system to supply gas into envelope including gas source, valve device and starting unit. Valve device is made in form of pneumatic distributor with two stable positions: open position in which gas from gas source gets into envelope through its inlet hole, and closed position in which gas flow through envelope hole is interrupted. Valve device which can be used in safety devices contains control valve and main valve connected with control valve and installed between lower pressure space and higher pressure space. Main valve contains hollow housing forming valve space and provided with first channel connecting valve space with lower pressure space, and second channel, connecting valve space with higher pressure space. First channel accommodates valve seat with at least one ring projection forming ring through channel, and shutoff member including movable dome-like cutoff member with top pointed to first channel and coaxial with channel, and guide. Cutoff member and guide are installed-inside valve space being telescopically interconnected. First space with outer hole from side of first channel and coaxial with said channel and second space with outer hole from side of second channel and coaxial with said channel are made in guide. First and second spaces are connected with control valve made for alternately connecting either first and second spaces to each other, or connecting first space with atmosphere and stopping second space from side of control valve.
