FIELD: industrial inorganic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: fine (100 to 30 nm particle size) tungsten carbide or tungsten and cobalt carbide mixtures useful in production of solid alloys with elevated performance characteristics are obtained from water-soluble organometallic mixture containing tungsten or tungsten and cobalt, which are subjected to heat treatment in inert or carbidizing gas atmosphere. Method is distinguished by that saturation of material formed upon heat treatment with carbon atoms proceeds already in drying stage, which, on the one hand, prevents proceeding of redox reactions in the carbidization stage and correspondingly reduces probability of grain growth and, on the other hand, ensures higher carbidization kinetic characteristics due to elevated rate of diffusion of carbon atoms in lower tungsten carbides already formed in drying stage.
