FIELD: textile industry. SUBSTANCE: rapier has casing with part for coupling with flexible or rigid tie-rod, thread catching device with immovable clamping member and movable clamping member, and electric drive located inside rapier casing and operatively connected with movable clamping member for driving thereof. Electric drive is adapted for regulating clamping force of thread catcher and controlling its clamping cycle. Movable clamping member is pressed by joining force to immovable clamping member. Electric drive may be changed over from mode for creating clamping force acting in direction coinciding with that of joining force to mode for creating releasing force counteracting said joining force and exceeding its value. Value of clamping and releasing force created by electric drive may be individually regulated during the entire weaving cycle. Weft thread laying device equipped with said rapier is described. EFFECT: enhanced reliability in operation of rapier mechanisms and improved quality of produced fabric. 7 cl, 5 dwg
