FIELD: production of optical fiber. SUBSTANCE: method involves providing initial drawing of fiber and directing drawn fiber around first spool to second spool; rotating spools so that fiber is wound around first spool and wound onto second spool; cutting fiber between said spools and winding drawn fiber onto first spool while controlling fiber wound onto second spool. Optical fiber drawing apparatus has winding cage for securing first accumulating spool about first spindle, first engine for rotating first spool relative to first spindle; device for securing second spool around second spindle, second engine for rotating second spool relative to second spindle, and device for regulating relative rotational speeds provided by engines.
