SUBSTANCE: invention relates to hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds containing olefin bonds, in particular to selective hydrogenation of polymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes. Catalytic composition is prepared by interaction between (A) at least one cyclopentadienyl complex of transition metal having general formula (I):(R)(R¹)M (R²)(R³), where R denotes anion containing -cyclopentadienyl group coordinated with M₁, M₁ is selected from titanium, zirconium, and hafnium; R² and R³, same or different, are halides; R¹ denotes cyclopentadienyl and R²; and (B) alkylating composition consisting of (b1) organometallic compound with general formula (II) M₂(R⁴)(R⁵), where M₂ is magnesium; R⁴ aliphatic C1-C20-radical; and R⁵ is halogen or R⁴; and (b2) organoaluminum compound with general formula (III) Al(R⁶)₃, where R⁶ denotes C1-C16-hydrocarbon radical.
