FIELD: metallurgy; arc melting of high-reaction metals and alloys. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes check of change in electrode-to-electrode distance and mass flow rate in crystallizer and intensity of magnetic field of solenoid. Electromagnetic oscillations are excited in furnace at resonance frequency of crystallizer and change in resonance frequency of electromagnetic oscillations due to change in length of consumable electrode and level of filling of crystallizer with molten metal in the course of melting. Level of filling of crystallizer with molten metal and reduction of length of electrode are determined by change in resonance frequency of electromagnetic oscillations during definite period of time; electrode-to-electrode distance and mass flow rate are determined by these magnitudes. Magnitudes thus obtained are used for control of mode of operation of furnace. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency. 1 dwg
