FIELD: heavy-power microwave electronics; microwave oscillators. SUBSTANCE: proposed vircator, like that of prior art, has pulse voltage generator, cathode electrode, and anode electrode insulated from the latter, both placed in magnetic field; anode electrode has modulating section in the form of waveguide enclosing cathode electrode and virtual cathode shaping section turning into horn with radiation exit window; novelty is that virtual-cathode shaping waveguide section of proposed vircator is made in the form of sections whose sectional area stepwise increases toward radiation exit and these sections are separated in step plane by means of additional anode diaphragms in the form of grid transparent for electromagnetic wave of type generated by preceding waveguide section. Grids can be made of wire thread in the form of spiral of Archimedes or of wire rings secured on insulating holders. Adjacent waveguide sections may be of adjustable electric length.
