FIELD: methods of production of activated carbon. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes pyrolysis of wood in immovable retort provided with external heater, evacuation of pyrolysis gases, activation of charcoal by water steam at temperature of 850-950 C; prior to activation, water in the amount of 0.4-0.5% of volume of retort is fed to retort; steam is fed for activation at temperature of 180-250 C at simultaneous delivery of air; upon completion of activation, delivery of air is discontinued and delivery of steam is continued till temperature of charcoal drops to 199-150 C. Device proposed for realization of this method has chamber with firebox, air supply passages, gas ducts, wood pyrolysis retort mounted in chamber above firebox and provided with steam duct and outlet pipe line; it is made in form of parallelepiped mounted in chamber horizontally; its height does not exceed 0.7 m and width is equal to 4.2-4.3 m; retort is provided with air supply pipe line; through passages feeding air to firebox are provided with dampers at their ends.
