Method for preparing carboxymethylcellulose potassium salt involves interaction of sulfate pulp mercerized with an aqueous 35% potassium hydroxide solution with monochloroacetic acid in organic liquid medium consisting of mixture of benzene or toluene with ethanol or isopropanol in the mass ratio = (60: 50)- (40: 50). Invention provides preparing polymer eliciting good thickening and anti-filtrating properties and combining both with alkali metal cations and calcium and magnesium cations.
