FIELD: chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to synthesis of water-soluble derivatives of cellulose, in particular, to methods for preparing carboxymethylcellulose salts that are used in petroleum-gas prospecting and petroleum- -gas extracting fields of industry, in manufacturing pharmaceutical and cosmetic agents and in textile, food and paper industry. Method for preparing carboxymethylcellulose potassium salt involves interaction of sulfate pulp mercerized with an aqueous 35% potassium hydroxide solution with monochloroacetic acid in organic liquid medium consisting of mixture of benzene or toluene with ethanol or isopropanol in the mass ratio = (60: 50)- (40: 50). Invention provides preparing polymer eliciting good thickening and anti-filtrating properties and combining both with alkali metal cations and calcium and magnesium cations.
