FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: catalyst is prepared by mixing zeolite Y in rare-earth ultrastable cationic form, clay, and a binding agent followed by molding, drying, and calcination, said binding agent being product obtained by treating aluminum hydroxide having pseudoboehmite-structure with nitric acid to pH at least 3.5. Zeolite is mixed with clay, dried to achieve moisture content of zeolite no higher than 10%, and ground to graininess below 4 mcm for more than 80% material. Drying and grinding of zeolite and clay may be effected separately. Binder is added to thus prepared mixture at weight ratio zeolite/clay/binder (on conversion to Al2O3) (7-20): (70-83): (8-12) in the following way: first 70-80% of total amount of binder is added, resulting mixture is stirred and granulated on tableting machine, after which the rest of binder is added, granules are kept for 30-60 min to soak the outside layer of granules, which are then pelleted on plate, dried, and calcined.
