FIELD: mechanical engineering; piston internal combustion engines.
SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes delivery of part of gaseous and/or liquid fuel mixed with air into engine, delivery of second part of fuel and air into generator to get hydrogen-containing converted fuel and mixing the fuel with initial nonconverted fuel, delivery of obtained mixture into engine and control of content of mixture and ratio of amount of fuel and converted fuel delivered into engine. Generator provides selective oxidizing of fuel on structurized catalysts under autothermal conditions to provide converted fuel in which summary content of hydrogen and carbon oxide is not less than 30% by volume. Starting of engine and its operation at no load is carried out of converted fuel without delivery of initial fuel directly into engine, and when operating under load, air, main and converted fuel are delivered into engine at ratio providing content of toxic components in exhaust gases as stated below; carbon oxide not more than 3000 ppm, hydrocarbons not more than 400 ppm, nitrogen oxides not more than 20 ppm. Fuel of the same grade can be used as main fuel delivered directly into engine and fuel delivered for converting.
EFFECT: reduced toxicity of exhaust gases, reduced consumption of fuel owing to operation on leaned gas mixtures.
