FIELD: carbon materials.

SUBSTANCE: sorbent includes x-ray-amorphous carbon having following characteristics: initial oxidation temperature in air ≤ 380oC; temperature of maximum oxidation rate ≤ 590oC; highest oxidation temperature in air ≤ 630oC; initial hydrogenolysis rate at 700oC in absence of hydrogen-activating catalyst ≥ 0.5 mole C/h; limiting MnO-4

-ion amount consumed on contact with 1g above-mentioned carbon in solution ≥ 16 mmole. Method compresses evaporation of carbon-containing material in helium atmosphere when 50 to 300 W/mm2 energy stream is supplied, sedimentation of fullerene-containing carbo black formed during evaporation, extraction of fullerenes front carbon black with organic solvent, separation, washing, and drying of sediment. Alternatively, method comprises pyrolysis of (i) mixture of hydrogen with hydrocarbon selected from alkanes C4+, alkened C2+, alkynes C2+, and cycloalkanes C3+, or (ii) mixture of hydrogen with at least two of the above-mentioned hydrocarbons at hydrogen-to-hydrocarbon volume ratio (0.7-7):1 on nickel or iron catalyst at 500-800oC, followed by magnet separation of thus obtained sorbent from catalyst.

EFFECT: enabled preparation of high-capacity sorbent with a wide application area.
